Located at the intersection of the Metauro and Foglia rivers, the town of Urbino dates back to the 3rd century BC. Set on top of two hills, 451 metres above sea-level, Urbino became ‘a town built like a palace’ during the reign of Duke Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482) and is now a UNESCO world heritage site. The court of Duke Federico attracted many an artist and genius, including Luciano Laurana, Piero Della Francesca, Leon Battista Alberti, Francesco Di Giorgio Martini and Paolo Uccello. This rich cultural heritage more recently nurtured the likes of Raffaello Sanzio, Donato Bramante, Girolamo Genga, Federico Barocci, Federico Brandanti and Timoteo Viti.
